Customer Reviews:

  Awesome Effect (16 July 2010)
The game was pretty good, had a great story although the main story was only about 6 missions long.
The dialogue was great, this game has what makes an RPG, an RPG, actual choices that influence the plot.
The combat system felt sluggish at times, but it was still fun, albeit it made the game less exciting.
Looking around for minerals is a real chore and by the end of the game I had the max amount of money without getting any type of mineral.

  Mass Effect 2 (23 June 2010)
Without going into too much detail, as other reviews already give the full details; This is one of the most absorbing RPG/action games I have played. One of the greats that pulls you in and you never want it to end. Excellent character personalities and interaction, and addictive combat mechanics make this my favourite game to date.

If you like RPGs, don't miss Mass Effect (14 June 2010)
Well, what can I say? This game just has it all.
The story is dense and incredibly exciting and if you're a fan of hard Sci-Fi, you won't be able to put it down.
The sceneries can only be described as stunning. I probably spent almost as much time just exploring as I spent playing the actual story.
Finally, there's the voice acting and thankfully, it's done right for once. The voice actors are perfectly cast and capture the atmosphere perfectly.
As for the interface, it's surprisingly smooth. Even though the combat system is complex, mixing a lot of weapons and abilities, after a while you won't even notice the buttons you are pressing to make things happen.

The only gripe I can find with this game is the auto-save feature. At times, you will run past auto-save checkpoints every five minutes, at others, there won't be one for an hour's worth of gameplay. So save often...

A quick word about the bonus material: The Special Edition contains background information like developer interviews and concept art plus the complete soundtrack which is positively awesome. Also included is the extra chapter "Bring Down the Sky" which is also available as DLC. All in all well worth the money.

  Awesome (28 May 2010)
Brilliant attention to detail, freedom of choices and clever AI make challenging gameplay. Fantastic choice-driven game outcomes, deep characters, plot and addictive side-missions make for an unforgettable gaming experience.

I adore Sci-Fi....and this is the best Sci-Fi game out there.... (27 May 2010)
Well, I heard very good things about this game before I bought it, and just let me say - I'm sorry that I hadn't bought it sooner. Mass Effect is the greatest Sci-Fi game I have ever played, no scratch that, this is THE greatest game I have ever played in my life, and as a long time and avid gamer I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the genre of Science Fiction or/and loves RPG's that are set in a brilliant, movie-like atmosphere.

I am also a great fan of Halo, and although it is an FPS (first person shooter) and is very different from the gameplay of Mass Effect (for starters the combat is in the third person and not the first, and there are many more abilities you can use), I prefer the story of Mass Effect, which is really something because as a writer, I found the story of Halo very epic and gripping. So if you like story, you won't be disappointed. 10/10 for that part of the game. However, if you don't like a lot of cut scenes and would rather charge through the game like a moronic rhino, then this is probably not the game for you. You obviously just want to shoot things than actually listen to the story and take an interest in the often forgotten side of games - the meaning behind them. Take your time, the achievements will come as you keep playing.

In the game, you play as an Alliance Military soldier called Commander Shepard, who at the start is completely customisable, right down to the nitty-gritty things such as scars on the face. This bit is very good, because you can play as either a male or female, and even base the looks of your Shepard upon yourself. You can also choose a first name for your character, but this has no impact upon the game, it is just a personal choice. However, if you just want to skip all the customising and get straight into the game, you can pick a default male character called John Shepard (who is a soldier and has the background history of Spacer and the psychological profile of War Hero) or a default female character called Jane Shepard (has the same class and background). Oh yes, I forgot to mention the classes you can choose from and the backgrounds. Here they are:
Classes: Soldier (Combat Specialist), Engineer (Tech Specialist), Adept (Biotic Specialist), Infiltrator (Combat/Tech), Vanguard (Biotic/Combat), Sentinel (Biotic/Tech).
Backgrounds: Spacer (brought up in space because parents were in Navy), Earth-born (brought up on Earth, duh), and Colonist (brought up on a colony that was attacked by slavers).
Psychological Profile: War Hero (basically, survived impossible odds and saved a colony single-handed), Reckless (known for being brutal and calculating in your tactics, but this choice is not necessarily evil, just callous) and Sole Survivor (the rest of your unit was wiped out in an attack and you were the only one left standing).
There is quite a wide selection of choice for what you can be, and this does slightly affect the story with different side missions, people you can meet and people's reactions to you. Overall very good, and will keep you playing for quite a few re-runs of the game. It has with me.

The graphics of the game are generally very good - the only big problem is the texturing of the cinematic cut-scenes especially, where it takes a few more seconds before actually showing the visuals as they should be. This is a minor thing though, and although it might be annoying at first, you get used to it.

Now, I have also heard a fair few gripes over the combat system of the game (although I can't see why) and have come to the conclusion that the combat is quite innovative, and that when you get used to it can be very fun and simple to use, whilst maintaining a high standard of quality. The only things that can get annoying is the grenades (which are hard to use seeing as to throw them you need to press the back button whilst aiming and keeping yourself from being shot) and the cover system (which if you're not careful can actually kill you instead of protect you), but these two things are very minor issues and will probably only raise one or two curses as you play throughout the game. They take nothing away from the enjoyability.

Overall, this game is brilliant...and although not perfect, it is up there among the games that strive to be the closest possible to that impossible goal...
